In 1824, Dr. Johann Siegart, a German doctor serving as Surgeon-General of Simon Bolivar's army in Venezuela, was working to find a medicine that would enhance the appetite and digestive well-being of his soldiers. Dr. Siegart eventually settled upon a mix of herbs and spices that he called “Amargo Aromatico” — today, this world-famous concoction is known simply as Angostura Bitters.
Building on his early success, Dr. Siegart established the House of Angostura in the eponymous Venezuelan city, where he began to manufacture his bitters on a grander scale (the business would later become the sole purveyor of bitters to the King of Prussia, Spain, and King George V). As he continued to expand, Dr. Siegart, along with his younger brother and his son, moved the House of Angostura to Port of Spain, Trinidad in 1876 and began producing rum.
The rums of the House of Angostura® are a treasured legacy, a tribute to the evolution of the rum industry in the Caribbean and the men and women who nurtured it. The House of Angostura® owns the only rum distillery in Trinidad today, and controls its rum manufacturing process from end to end. Our rums are blended by masters with years of experience and training in original traditions, who closely maintain guarded formulas and techniques. Our blenders are involved at every stage to ensure the highest quality and consistency, from molasses selection through to cask selection.
Amaro di Angostura is derived from the bespoke process used in creating the House of Angostura’s iconic aromatic bitters. It is a deep amber colour, offering aromas of cinnamon, dark chocolate and unmistakable Angostura aromatic bitters. The finish is perfectly balanced, exotic, lush and reminiscent of the essence of Trinidad and Tobago’s pulsating rhythms, tropical climate and beauty. This beautiful liqueur can be enjoyed over ice, is splendid on its own and offers delicious harmony in a cocktail. You can count on explosive flavors of warm cinnamon and licorice notes.
